Derek Malicki is a Thunder Bay born urban explorer, photographer, and entrepreneur. Derek began shooting with his first camera at the age of sixteen, and quickly combined his new found creativity with his passion for urban exploration, resulting in an extensive portfolio. His unique, often surreal expressions of a post-industrialist world frequently feature decaying industrial and historically significant locations around Thunder Bay. Derek’s photos offer a glimpse of places that thrived in eras gone by, slowly eroding in the relentless passage of time.

State of Decay contains both digital and 35mm film photography from a variety of subjects in the Thunder Bay area from 2011 to present. “I see photography as a mixture of science and beauty that creates magic. For me, my photos are not just another image, taken from a split second in time, frozen as a distant memory; but something from a time and place - removed from where we are now. They are both a memory of the past and a reminder of who we are and how we got to where we are today. In many ways, I am not trying to capture what I see when I look through the lens, but rather what I feel”
