Co.Lab Gallery presents
KAT TWOMEY
REFLECTING POOL
OPENING FRIDAY APRIL 5TH 2024, 7-10 PM.
EXHIBITION CLOSES APRIL 21ST, 2024.
Kat Twomey is a ceramic artist based in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Kat is a celebrated maker, having been voted "Best Potter" in Thunder Bay's arts and culture magazine The Walleye in 2021, 2022 and 2023. She is a graduate of Lakehead University's art program, graduating in 2014 with a major in ceramic sculpture.
Reflecting Pool is Twomey’s debut solo Exhibition and features a collection of ceramic sculptures created using the coil and pinch method. These forms are a representation of the head and mind, creating a physical depiction of mental space. Architecture and tiny figures aim to draw the viewer in - imagining themselves existing within the scene. The size relationships of these pieces are meant to quiet the mind and offer a grand sense of scale when reflecting on one's own internal landscape. The colourful glazes evoke a range of emotions and the stillness of the glassy water offers an invitation for self reflection.
Under the name Black Dog Ceramics, Kat brought her functional ceramics to the public in 2018. By focusing on ergonomic design and celebrating living plants through decoration techniques, this work emphasizes the connection humans have to daily food rituals and the natural environment. Her sculptural pieces reflect her functional wares, taking inspiration from architecture, geometry, and organic forms. Working with themes of mental health, mindfulness, physical space and internal subjectivity, Kat celebrates the meditative process of making.
