Co.Lab Gallery presents
Lex Bohemier’s
TO BE A PRETTY BOY
SATURDAY APRIL 30th 6:00 TO 10:00PM
Lex Bohemier (also known as Oat Milk Lady) is a queer artist based in Thunder Bay Ontario. They are a globally recognized artist, having sold works all over the world, and they were voted Best Visual Artist in The Walleye Arts & Culture magazine in 2021. Lex has been creating art for their whole life, and started selling their work at the age of fourteen. Lex’s experience in gender studies during their time at Lakehead University has greatly impacted their work and the way that they approach art. At nineteen, they began creating digital works and exploring different artistic styles and techniques. In their digital artwork, Lex considers a wide range of focuses including the monstrous feminine, intersectional feminism, the queer experience, gender dysphoria, and the processing of grief tied to each of those actualities.
At the beginning of the pandemic, Lex felt determined to make their artistic pursuits a full-time job. As a result, they established an online platform under the moniker “Oat Milk Lady”, which quickly gained global recognition on Instagram and TikTok and allowed Lex to build their digital work into a recognized brand. This created a newfound freedom to create, and Lex began to reconnect with their love for painting. Their paintings, sold across North America, are reminiscent of abstract impressionism, art brut, and surrealism, and tell stories of Lex’s experiences as a queer artist.
To Be a Pretty Boy is Lex’s debut exhibition, and focuses on the deterioration of a relationship, gender dysphoria, and the stages of grief that follow. The works in this exhibition explore the beauty of vulnerability and aim to be personalized by the viewer. This exhibition features multiple acrylic and oil pastel works, as well as one large interactive digital piece, and most of the pieces are available for purchase.
