Co.Lab Gallery presents
Jared + Tim Tait’s
MIND - BODY - SPIRIT
FRIDAY APRIL 1ST 6:00 TO 10:00PM
Jared and Tim Tait are Anishinaabe from Sachigo Lake First Nation. Tim has been painting since he was nine years old, first selling his works at age twelve. Jared (30) started painting in 2019, and grew up surrounded in his dad’s paintings, books, and collected items that influence his work. Both Jared and Tim are inspired by their cultural knowledge and practices, as well as other artists such as Norval Morrisseau, Roy Thomas, and the Group of Seven.
Mind, Body, Spirit explores a search for balance that recurs in each painting. Tim notes that balance can never quite be reached between the three, but that we must try: in his case, his spirit is the strongest. To fuel the mind, we must learn; to fuel the body, we must maintain our health; to fuel the spirit, we must create.
Both Tim and Jared include demons in their paintings; specifically, demons that plague us all in different ways, such as addiction and murder. These demons exemplify the struggles faced by Indigenous peoples cross-generationally. Their inclusion allows Jared and Tim to present spirits that roam and are lost to these struggles, as those experiences that occur in past, present and future also occur simultaneously.
This is both Tim and Jared’s first exhibition, with over 50 works displayed. Each one-of-a-kind piece is available for purchase.
