Co.Lab gallery presents
Christian Chapman’s
Ziibaaska'iganagooday - The Jingle Dress
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 25TH 6:00 TO 10:00PM
Christian Chapman (b, 1975) is of Anishinaabe heritage from Fort William First Nation, Ontario. Christian uses storytelling as a main theme in his practice to create his images. The act of storytelling has been an important part of his life: it has informed him of his culture by shaping his identity, personal experiences, and worldview.
Ziibaaska’iganagooday announces female identifying Indigenous, community members dressed in their Jingle Dresses.
“Ziibaaska’iganagooday | The Jingledress ” was recently shown at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation Gallery, M’Chigeeng First Nation and at Station Gallery, Whitby, ON, (2019). Just prior, Chapman’s other exhibition “Anishinaabeg: Art and Power,” was shown at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, ON (2017).
In the context of both the start of a new year and the continuation of a global pandemic, Co.Lab has chosen to present Ziibaaska'iganagooday. The jingle dress and it’s healing dance emerged over a century ago, during a global epidemic of influenza that was devastating to Ojibwe communities. Christian Chapman’s series is now home and being exhibited for the first time in its own region for its own community. Ziibaaska’iganagooday brings forward local Indigenous community members, who standing proudly in their Jingle Dresses, send forth a message of healing.
Chapman has received numerous awards, such as the Hnatyshyn Foundation Reveal Art National Award Prize (2017), the Ontario Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts as Emerging Artist of the Year (2016), and the K. M. Hunter Artist Award of the Ontario Arts Foundation (2016). His work can be found in the art collections of the National Archives of Canada, the Government of Ontario Art Collection and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, as well as in several private collections.
