Anne Winkworth
My paintings are expressionistic and explore relationships between vibrantly bold colours, combinations and contrasts. I primarily work in oil paint because of its potential to contribute to the surface texture of the canvas. I can add playful and textural brushstrokes which help to enhance the conveyance of my vision, as well as the physical description of the subject. Working on larger-scale canvases allows me to engage more spontaneously and physically where my movements and gestures become an integral part of the artwork.
When viewing my paintings, I want the viewer to experience an emotional response to the spirit of my subjects rather than presenting a more traditional and realistic representation. I hope that the viewer is transported to a reality that is as compelling as the one I experience, and which aligns with Albert Giacometti’s statement that “The object of art is not to represent reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.”
Nicole Sutherland
I have always been interested in art and have forever been a creative soul. To my parents’ dismay, this started in my early years with drawing on the pages of the inside of my parents' World Book Encyclopedias. Since then, I have expanded and fed my desire to transfer what inspires me from landscape and nature onto canvas. Oil painting the landscape has brought me an outlet to be creative - where nature can be beautifully wild and at the same time be perfect with order. I have found that no matter how you receive nature or art - there is no mistaking that it is right for the soul.
I am a landscape painter and I paint in a style characterized by the use of intense colour, which becomes the dominant feature of the resultant work of art, more important than its other qualities. I am hoping that my work strikes a desire to come up close, and take a look at broad, thick strokes, that somehow take on the wild, abstract side of nature. But then stepping back, I want my audience to see that the strokes do make order and I hope they find beauty in my landscapes. Perhaps they can even see a tree or rock or something in between.
“Oil painting the landscape has brought me an outlet to be creative - where nature can be beautifully wild and at the same time be perfect with order. I have found that no matter how you receive nature or art - there is no mistaking that it is right for the soul.”
Sue Lewis
Drawing and painting have been a part of my life since before I can remember. Over the years I have worked with a variety of mediums and grown through workshops and the mentoring of other artists. I am currently immersed in working with the many-layered effects that can be created with cold wax and oils. I like to think of myself as an intuitive artist ... letting things evolve and trusting the mediums to take the painting where it needs to go. At times my work is more representative and at the same time, I aspire to lean toward abstraction in attempting to express the feeling behind a work.
My goal as an artist is to continue to learn, experiment and grow through the creative process and to share how I see and experience the world. I hope you enjoy the stories, inspirations and ideas that have helped to shape the paintings in our collection.
