HOSPICE NORTHWEST

PERSONAL LENS ON GRIEF

COMMUNITY-ENGAGED PROJECT AND EXHIBITION

PRIVATE OPENING THURSDAY NOVEMBER 9TH, 2023, 6-8 PM

EXHIBITION CLOSES NOVEMBER 29TH, 2023.

In April 2022, Hospice Northwest Services asked the community to share their grief experiences by taking a photo that shows what grief looks like to them. These images, together with a brief story page, created A Personal Lens on Grief. This project allowed viewers and visitors to witness the impacts of grief and create a community of support. The photos encouraged discussion about a difficult topic and gave Hospice Northwest Services an opportunity to educate Thunder Bay about its grief support services. Hospice Northwest Services is honoured to be hosting Personal Lens on Grief at Goods & Co. for a second year during the month of November 2023. The month of November holds significance as Children’s Grief Awareness Day falls on Nov 16, 2023, and National Grief & Bereavement Day on Nov 21.

Hospice Northwest Services was recognized at the 12th Annual Mayor’s Community Safety Awards with an Outstanding Community Project Award for Personal Lens on Grief. The award, sponsored by Circle K, provided the funding for the 2023 Personal Lens Exhibition.

This project also coincides with the Journey through Grief Conference held on Nov 14th at Goods & Co. This is a full-day conference with a variety of local guest speakers and interactive workshops to support individuals who are grieving. The event will feature a holistic, wellness & self-care vendor’s market. Please visit www.hospicenorthwest.ca  for more details.

Hospice Northwest offers thanks to Goods & Co. Co for the use of their space for this exhibition, Lakehead Printing for the printing of the photographs, and special thanks to all of the participants who shared their photos and stories of grief. Please know your participation in this project helps in normalizing grief.

Personal Lens on Grief Committee: Thank you to Claudia Otto, Diana Prairie, Kimberley Ramsbottom, Jessica Bruce, Cherie Kok, and Kathleen Buso for their support and guidance in bringing this show to the community.
